Avoiding Down Time: Monitoring Critical Services

The issues which can manifest themselves as downtime are as varied as they are complex. Taking your eye off the ball for just a few minutes can mean a critical UC service or application misses a beat, creating a chain reaction and widespread disruption to services. Let’s look at a recent example where Virsae Service Management’s (VSM) monitoring of critical services helped prevent a major outage.

In Avaya architecture, IP Server Interface (IPSI) boards connect the core ACM server to Port Networks via the Control Network. IPSI boards don’t like slow networks and use heartbeat messages to track the performance of the Control Network. If heartbeats are missed, it means other data is going missing between the ACM server and the Port Network too.

The VSM reports taken from a customer show the direct linkages between slow Control Networks and missed heartbeats. If heartbeats don’t arrive the IPSI knows something is wrong with the network. Miss three heartbeats in a row and the IPSI will restart, dropping everything handled by the whole port network. This can be thousands of phones and hundreds of gateways.

“When we ran VSM’s IPSI Peg count report we saw Port Network 2 was very, very close to restarting. We then looked at the IPSI Round Trip Delay report to find that latency of the control network was the cause of this looming problem. Our engineer got straight onto it and the performance increased markedly. With the help of VSM we avoided an outage for thousands of our users.”

Don’t accept downtime. Let Virsae Service Management be your all-seeing, all-hearing superhero for your UC platform, deflecting problems, preventing use frustration and defending business continuity.
